In 2022, Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi passed away trying to save three people from drowning in a powerful rip current.

The legendary artist, aged 60, sacrificed his life during a heroic rescue attempt off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, leaving behind a global legacy of bravery.

On July 4, Major Robert Bourgeau, a scuba diving instructor nearby, heard a woman screaming as she, her 11-year-old daughter, and a soldier were swept up by riptide.

Bourgeau managed to save the mother and child and helped the soldier reach safety, not realizing that Takahashi had also gone into the water to try to help.

Witnesses saw Takahashi struggling in the riptide before he disappeared beneath the waves. Two days later, the Japan Coast Guard recovered his body near Awa, Nago.

He was wearing snorkeling equipment, and officials reported injuries that appeared to have been caused by marine animals.

Kazuki Takahashi, born Kazuo Takahashi, was a Japanese manga artist best known for Yu-Gi-Oh!, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1996 to 2004.

His work inspired a hit TV series, films, and the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, which holds the Guinness World Record as the best-selling card game ever.
