Japanese Man Raised in Poverty Learns He Was Switched at Birth After Decades of Struggle
In 2013, a 60-year-old Japanese man has gone viral after winning $370,000 in damages following a shocking discovery that he was switched at birth.
Raised in poverty, he spent his life struggling to make ends meet, while the child who took his place grew up in wealth and privilege.
Raised by his single mother after his father passed away in 1955, the 60-year-old man grew up in a small apartment, relying on welfare checks alongside his three older brothers.
He worked odd jobs, attended night industrial high school classes, and later became a truck driver.
In stark contrast, the boy raised in his place by wealthy parents enjoyed a life of comfort. Privately tutored, he attended university, and eventually became the president of a company.
His upbringing offered opportunities and privileges that the truck driver could only imagine.
According to reports, the hospital mix-up occurred at San-Ikukai Hospital in Tokyo, when a staff member accidentally switched newborns after a bath.
Neither family was aware of the mistake, and the children grew up believing they were living their rightful lives.
The truth came to light in 2009 when DNA tests, prompted by the wealthy family’s children noticing their eldest brother’s unusual features, confirmed the birth mix-up.
The revelation stunned both families and finally explained why the truck driver had endured a life of hardship.
Seeking justice, the man sued the hospital for $2.5 million. However, the court only awarded him $370,000 in damages for mental distress, validating the lifelong impact of the error.
The ruling drew national attention online, sparking conversations about ethics, and accountability.
Despite the pain and anger that accompanied the discovery, the man expressed no bitterness toward the individual who unknowingly lived the life meant for him.
“We’re both victims in this,” he said, adding that he feels gratitude toward both families involved.
