First Ever South Asian American Doll Comes To Life Thanks to An 8th-Grader’s Brilliance

Arusha Bhargava was honored for her contributions to the design and identity of the 2023 Girl of the Year doll, Kavika “Kavi” Sharma.

Kavi is the first American Girl doll created in the image of a South Asian girl with a cultural background and identity inspired by Arusha.

Arusha is an eighth-grader at Hillsborough Middle School and was chosen as a Youth Advisor to American Girl.

Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto made history as the first woman in 56 years to win three consecutive figure skating world titles.

Sakamoto, 23, clinched her third world title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, rallying from fourth place.

She is the first woman since Peggy Fleming in 1968 to win three consecutive years.

Wisconsin Mandates Asian American History in Public School Curriculum

The Wisconsin State Senate unanimously approved a bill requiring the teaching of Asian American and Hmong history in public schools.

Current laws require public schools to teach Black American, Latino American and Native American history.

Now, the bill is awaiting signed approval from Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers to become law.
