First look images for Hayao Miyazaki’s final film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ were released.

The images originated from a film program that was released by the studio in theaters and marks the first time that images from the film were publicly released given the lack of advertising leading up to its release.

The images can be seen below (note that the images may contain spoilers!).

The film is scheduled to be released in North American theaters later this year after it opens this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The film will be the first Japanese or animated film to open the festival, earning the honor after becoming the biggest debut in Studio Ghibli’s history with a $13.2M opening weekend in Japan despite no promotion or marketing.
