New York State Schools Will Close in Celebration of Lunar New Year For the First Time Ever
On January 29, public schools across New York will close in celebration of Lunar New Year, marking the holiday’s first official observance as a state-recognized holiday since its designation in 2023.

With Asian Americans being the fastest-growing racial group in New York, the move highlights the state’s changing demographic. In the 2023-2024 school year, nearly 10% of students are Asian American, with the percentage rising to 18.7% in New York City schools.
Assembly member Grace Lee, who helped pass the legislation, said this holiday acknowledges the contributions of Asian Americans and sends a message that they belong in New York.
Lee reflected that this moment is a direct result of having more Asian American legislators in the Assembly and Senate. The school closures offer an opportunity for all students to appreciate Asian tradition and reflect on the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year.

BLACKPINK’s Lisa is going viral after visiting Punch, the baby Japanese macaque at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan.
