Eating Kimchi Daily is Linked to Lower Obesity Risk
Kimchi lovers may have another reason to keep the Korean staple on the table.
A large study published in BMJ Open found that eating certain amounts and types of kimchi was associated with lower rates of obesity and abdominal obesity among Korean adults.
Researchers analyzed the diets and body measurements of 115,726 adults ages 40 to 69, looking specifically at consumption of popular varieties including baechu kimchi (cabbage kimchi) and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi).
Among men, eating one to three servings of kimchi per day was associated with roughly 11% to 13% lower odds of obesity compared with eating less than one serving daily.
The type of kimchi also appeared to matter. Men who ate at least three servings of baechu kimchi per day had about 10% lower odds of obesity and abdominal obesity. Among women, eating two to three servings per day was associated with about 8% lower odds of obesity.
Kkakdugi was also associated with lower abdominal obesity, with researchers observing lower odds among both men and women who regularly consumed it.
Kimchi is generally low in calories and contains fiber, vitamins, and beneficial compounds produced during fermentation. Previous research has explored whether these qualities may play a role in metabolism and weight regulation, although the exact relationship remains unclear.
And more kimchi wasn’t necessarily better. The researchers found that the association did not continue to improve at very high levels of consumption and noted that kimchi can also contribute significant amounts of sodium to the diet.
Most importantly, the study does not prove that eating kimchi prevents weight gain. Because researchers examined participants’ diets and body measurements at the same point in time, they could identify an association but could not determine whether kimchi itself caused the difference.
Still, the findings add to growing research around fermented foods and health and offer another reason to appreciate a food that has been part of Korean cuisine for generations.
For now, the takeaway is simple: kimchi can be a flavorful part of a balanced diet, but it isn’t a magic weight-loss food.
