Fourteen-year-old Sirish Subash, a 9th grader from Georgia, has been awarded the title of America’s Top Young Scientist for his creation of “Pestiscand,” a handheld device that detects pesticide residues on produce using AI technology.

Using light-based spectrophotometry and machine learning, his device achieved over 85% accuracy in identifying harmful chemicals on fruits and vegetables.

Subash won the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge, earning a $25,000 prize for his innovative project.
