Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian woman to win the Lead Actress award in a Drama Series at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards for her role as Toda Mariko in FX’s ‘Shogun.
Receiving her first Emmy nomination, she won the award. In her speech, she thanked co-stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, and her mother for inspiring her portrayal of Mariko.
Sawai dedicated her award to women who “expect nothing and continue to be an example,” highlighting the significance of her achievement.
